Typography letters (task 5)

For my typography unit task 5 asked me to take photos of objects and try to create an Alphabet, natural and man made. But i didn't want to stop there! While doing this i thought, how strong dose a letter need to be! dose the brain automatically put things together... when it is maybe an impression of something? while painting one day i accidentally got a finger print on my work, and it made me think about this impression thing again... so i tried i experimented: I really liked this! and thought about fingers in general, can i make an alphabet with them? with the lines and shapes? Yes i can... I then thought about WORDS. How objects can make letters to create words. I found this task very eye opening, as it caused me to always be on the look out for letters! they are EVERYWHERE! from a leaf to the way a scarf fell on the ground! It really make me think about how i see things, when i did a unit last year on reflection is caused me, and still c...

Jim Dine

Jim Dine is an American pop artist and printmaker,He is  considered part of the Neo-Dada movement. The first image i found that really caught my eye was this one: Gravel Road Woodcut, collagraph, intaglio and copperplate etching I thought this was really colourful and i loved the movement! i really like the contrast of the dark heavy line and the bright loose colour.  It feels very fresh and bright! I thought it was even more interesting because i found these other prints that were very dark and different compared to these. These are both etching i think, and are very different from the first image. I really like them, they are so interesting to look at. So busy. The first image i think is really visually nice, i like the contrast in the top of the paper and the bottom fading into little dots, i love how dark the shadows are. The second image is crazy, to me, dots, splashes, lines, tone. So much going on, the detail is i...

Grunge Typography

I have been really struggling with my typography unit, i have been trying to find an area i am interested in. My sketch book so far i am not happy with as it is a big all over the place trying to find my interest...  For out print making unit we had to do a self portrait made of words, as in, using words as line... So this got me thinking, how can i use typography in a more artistic way? in a way i will enjoy and find interesting!  I really liked this idea and started researching different kinds of typography. I came across a magazine called Ray Gun and a Graphic designer called David Carson, his message was this :  you don’t have to know the rules before breaking them, and never mistake legibility for communication.   Once i started looking into this kind of typography, i found an instant connection, i think firstly because this typography style was about spontaneity, rather than purpose and precision, it was the idea to instantl...

antoni tapies prints

I have been asked to look at the prints of Antoni Tapies, i have looked briefly at his paintings before but never his prints.  I found out he uses found objects and natural materials, but even more interesting his work has social themes, he was influenced by politics of the post - war state of the spanish government! So i decided to start looking at his prints! Antoni TAPIES CLAU 15 1973 lithograph the colour is AMAZING ! and i love the energy!  i could not remember what a lithograph was so i looked it up,  it is a print made by drawing on limestone with wax crayons, applying ink onto the stone and printing the image onto paper! i found a very  similar  one also  Als Mestres de Catalunya 1974 Lithograph I really like these! i love the contrast in line, thick and thin! it is so interesting, one thing i am finding about looking at other artists work, is to take my time with it... which i know probably sounds strange...

Painting, me

so after my last post, i decided to try out a different technique. i decided to look at Jackson Pollock, and it really inspired me to create. I started by thinning out some paint & just experimenting... I really liked how it came out, it really helped me remove some negative thoughts from my mind & put them on paper... but i wanted to keep going, to try and create something with meaning... one of my units theme is 'behind the scenes' i decided to look at behind the scenes of myself, starting with my blog post, and why i put myself down, what goes on in my mind behind my confident shell. I thought about colour & marks. HOW DO I FEEL? Angry - red - movement sad - grey - blobs in denial about it? - white- swirls simple but i thought i would try... After my summer holidays i started logging my dreams and once you write them down, you don't forget them. I had a dream the other night that i was in water, and i floated up an...

Richard Hamilton

Continuing my print reports, i have been asked to look at Richard Hamilton. I know that he is considered one of the first pop artists. The first image that i thought was interesting was this.... My Marilyn  Screen print on paper 1965 This image was made from photographs of  Marilyn Monroe, i love the pink and grey colours in this, and what are the crosses? i know these were published after her death, are they to do with the artists mental state? and the pink colour is a contrast of that as it is associated with women, or being feminine.  OR is is a girly / childish mark for a kiss? the way the mark is made it looks like the first one to me. I know this is a screen print, and i don't know a lot about screen printing really, but it is something i know we will get to do in class! The next image i came across was this: Swingeing London III 1972 But then i found almost a progression of it? I found out thi...
