Kerry Jones came into our class to do a talk on her work, she is a multi- media artist who works with sound, film, photography ( archived ) and sculptural pieces of work.
She told us she works alone but also dose a lot of collaborations. She seemed to be fascinated with the idea of time travel through archived images.
Before graduating college in Hull she was given an opportunity to travel to Germany, she was asked to create a sculptural piece in an old coal factory. She told us that is fascinated her that the building was covered in nature trying to reclaim it. Next old machines, she placed turf so it would look like the machines were producing them. I liked this idea and thought it was very creative.
She also told us about a project she did in Galashiels, they were celebrating 100 years of the towns History. Shops all around the town had window displays that represented a period in time. During this project she started looking into archived photographs, and recordings from the Memory bank and started experimenting with photographs, film and sound. She would get old images and put something modern onto them for example this image is one of them. It is called Hoodie on bank Street.
I found it interesting that she edited these on paint and would print them put oil pastels and pen on them and scan them back in so many time to edit these.
She then started to experiment with film and got involved in a lot of projects and experimental film festivals. I liked that she used still images in her films i found that really interesting & would be good to remember when experimenting with film later on. Kerry told us about a project she took part in Dumfries where the people coming in had to go through a entrance, handing over the phones that were put into bags and they were decontaminated of technology and made to put on headphones and listen to sounds that kerry had made, she played it for us and it was lots of noise of electronics and then slowly faded into sounds of nature, i thought it was quite effective.
Over all it was very interesting and a different view on how artist work.
