Exploring self portraits

We were asked to draw a self portrait for next week, the only specifics were it had to be in pencil, and we had to be wearing a hat.  I started looking into self portraits and how artist can use them to express themselves.

I wanted to look at three things, amount of detail, style and expression. I don't really own any hats and i was looking around trying to borrow some, but then i thought, i don't wear hats... thats not really me, and i wanted to express myself... so what could i use?

I used a strainer on my head, found an old monocle and made a moustache and goatee out of paper... i thought about who i am, and to be honest i don't completely know. I feel i can be whoever i socially have to be. But one thing i do think i am is funny, and confident. I really wanted to express that in my drawing. I dress up to who i have to be that day, and i thought adding the goatee, moustache and monocle would be a funny way of expressing that thought. 

I then moved onto another thought about who i am, i am an artist, i am very caring, how could i express that in a drawing?

My cat has a habit of sitting on my shoulders and head and i wanted to try and draw that, i added the pencil because when i was drawing my face in the mirror i caught i glance of myself holding the pencil like this, i wanted to look more into style with this one i used scribbles and cross lines to fill in a lot of it. but i thought how far can i take it?? 

This one is a frying pan on my head, i wanted it to be slanted and a bit crazy then use expressive lines very, very loosely and quickly, to get it down, i think the scribbled lines works well with the energy of the image and it was really fun drawing this. I don't know if we are going to turn these into prints, so i really only had to do one with a hat on, but i took the opportunity to go a bit crazy, i wanted to explore myself and how to express it, and i am happy i did. i am loving drawing these, they really dominated my attention the last two days and i couldn't step away from them.

Typography Investagation.

We have started a new unit, typeface and letterforms. I found this very daunting, because, it is a completely new, huge world to me that i have never explored... We watched a film about Helvetica and it was very interesting but like i said i feel really overwhelmed. I wanted to know what happened before more in depth and really look into it as best i could. I decided to calm my nerves by looking into the history of type face, and to, i guess start at the beginning... for myself. while researching i found out that a lot of people agree that the creator of typography was a German man named Johannes Gutenberg. But before he came along books needed to be scribed, by hand. Obviously this was very time consuming, So Guttenberg created Blackletter. I think this was modeled after the scribe's. Photography : Rommert Boonstra & Laurie Simmons

For photography i wanted to look at artists who use models or staged worlds for their photography because its not something i looked into previous years. From moodel i came across Rommert Boonstra. He is a photographer, poet and theater director. He also taught photography at several art academies.He is well known for his Staged photography and he has Four books are published about his photo works. He uses everyday objects to create these worlds... I am pretty taken aback with these photographs and i am surprised there is not a lot about these images online. The only words i can find to describe them is other worldly. They look like completely different words, like something you would find in science fiction comic. They are just amazing. What i liked about these is the way he has used light and shadows to create the illusion of above and below, in the first 2.
