Oliver reed visited our college yesterday to give us a talk on his work, he spoke about how geology, connectivity with his surroundings, meditation and memory has been a key theme in his ever changing artwork from sculptors, oil paintings and drawings. He told us how he is always reinventing himself through his work, moving from one idea to the next, he spoke about a particular sculptor he built that was all about life and the landscape. It only lasted 24 hours before it was burnt, he then used the charcoal for a series of drawings, i loved the idea that these painting were a memory of that sculpture. Reed will often taking pieces of stone and rock from the environment he visits and incorporating them into his work. After creating a sculptor Reed will burn them, and retrieve the remaining charcoal and create what he called memory pods. he creates these with the charcoal from the remaining wood, tissue paper, sap, charcoal resin, hickory pods (that he selects to make sure they fit together), pine roots, cedar bark and pine needles that he uses to tie them together.

These pods are my favourite of his work, i love the ritual of it, a memory of what once was, i love how all his work has connection to the earth and our surroundings, you not only imagine the beauty of the things he has seen and painted, you can almost feel the rocks and tree's through the textures and techniques he uses, you can get a really good feel of this in his current work where he is using oil on aluminium.
