Contemporary Art Evaluation

This was definitely one of my favorite units this year. I loved looking at such a wide range of artists. What i love about contemporary art is how it can say so much or nothing at all, it can be so full or so bare. I started experimenting different techniques by looking at a few different artists like Sarah Lucas, Rachael whiteread, Julian Opie, David Carson, Damien Hirst, Yayoi Kusama and more. We started this unit by researching different artists and doing presentations in class and i really liked that because in little groups we got to look at things together. I ended up focusing on painting dots ( Kusama & Hurst) and working to the theme fragile. I ended up painting and photographing dots. I ended up combining with shadows and the eggs to make images that  i felt expressed the idea of  confined fragility.  I loved combining painting on something 3D and photography. The process was exciting because i go...

Surface Decoration Evaluation

This unit i struggled with at first i kept associating surface decoration with bags and pillows and things that were textiles and that is something i don't have much interest in. When i let go and started looking at other artists that work outside textiles i realized surface decoration is anything that is on a surface.... duh. I ended up, after experimenting, liking the idea of having something on a wall in an urban setting. I started making collages ( in previous blogs) that i felt worked with a rural and urban theme. I felt really happy with these, i was glad i found my interest in this unit. This year i have definitely found a love for digital collage and loved that i got to use it in this unit. I  found it interesting how things work with scale. I could like a collage but when put on a wall it didn't look right. I liked the process of this. I defiantly like thinking about how my work goes into a space - its something i want to think about next year...

Digital Art Evaluation

As I said in the post before, I was worried about this unit because I felt I had not done anything for it. One, because it was all digital so I had nothing physical and two because it was all blended into other units. Once I actually looked at how much digital work I had produced I was pretty happy with my work... I explored digital art for my units Art project, Contemporary art, Illustration and Surface Decoration. For Art Project I looked at a few different artists that worked with projecting and moving image. ( Sonia Falcone, Tony Oursler, Jean Painlevé, Joan Jonas) For Contemporary art I looked at Sarah Lucas, Matt Herring, Julian Opie, Orla Kiely, David Carson. For Illustration and surface decoration I looked at Alice Potter, Orla Kiely, Victo Ngai. I explored different ways to work digitally with moving image, photography, photo montage/ collage, Pattern / Illustration and Typography. I started thinking about the theme Environment and ended up tying this unit into my surf...

Contemporary art 2

Continuing with my idea i started painting some more eggs. I liked these because they went well with my theme fragile. I wanted to start taking things further and wanted to experiment a little more. I started thinking about how to capture dots and thought about the holes in the kitchen sieve and wanted to experiment with the shadows it might cast...  I thought these were really interesting and wanted to keep going i realized it made a reflection on my cooker top and loved how it looked. I then put the sieve over the eggs and moved my phone camera close to the holes.  I loved how these looked. I liked adding the textures and the shadows. I loved using a combination of shadow, painting, photography and something 3 dimensional.
