This unit completely took my by surprise. I knew very little about illustration and felt very intimidated by the unit. I just thought where do i start?. Over the last few years i have found out that is what i always think when i start a new unit. I panic about stepping into a different artistic field.
Obviously we were asked to experiment and then produce two final illustrations from any two parts of the book 1984.
In class, at the beginning on this unit, we went over a few different artists and together looked at there work. we looked at Joe Sacco, Geoft Grandfield, Edward Ardizzone.
At this stage i was quite blown back by the range of ways illustrators work. I started getting very absorbed in the work & loved Thursday class because i didn't know what we would be doing. I loved the time restricted challenges, where we only had a few hours, because i loved pushing myself to see what i could do.
I then started looking at Victo Ngai and Tove Jansson.
I started getting really excited when i saw their work. I Loved the way Tove Jannsson drew and used negative space in her work and i loves Victo Ngai's technique. Most of all i loved drawing again. I felt like i had been doing so much digital work that i started working on my illustration unit at home in the evenings because i loved taking the time at night to draw. Which i will be continuing to do throughout the summer.
As i said i would spend the evenings at home drawing out illustrations and then class time editing them on the computer. I enjoyed this so much. I did think about doing collage because i enjoy it so much, but i wanted to do something different from my usual type of thing, because it was a new unit & i wanted to explore something different.
After experimenting i did my final illustrations.
I just felt like i could have kept going with this unit. I do wish i had pushed myself more but i always think this, i always know i can do more and do better, but i think that is a good thing to know you can keep pushing yourself and always trying to improve.
I think you can really see the inspiration i got from Tove Jansson in the colours and the way the figures are drawn.
I am happy overall with this unit because of how i personally connected with it. I think it has taught me a lot about illustration and how many different way illustrators work. I am very glad i had this unit.
