My new unit is on reflecting my world i need to think about how i would reflect my own Area ( i decided that would be peebles) in photographs to attract new businesses and tourism. i first decided to look into other artists who use reflections in there own work.
i decided to first look at Esher, as i already new about his use of reflection in his work and thought it would get the ball rolling a bit.
M.C. Esher was a Dutch graphic artists who specialised in lithographs, woodcuts/engravings, drawings and sketches. i started looking into his work that uses reflection.
Hand with reflecting sphere - 1935
Still life with spherical mirror- 1934
Three Spheres 2 - 1946
I decided to try some of these, as photographs, myself. i wanted to see how these turned out and if i could develop them into my unit later. i really liked the idea of having an image that reflected another image inside it.
This as a photo dose not work, the composition is wrong but as a rough idea i think i can work with it. I decided to just set up a scene with what I had to hand, and try and reflect my face. the quality is not great, but I just wanted to give it a go to try and get a feel for it. I really like the reflection back and I think if I had a bigger reflective surface like a Christmas bauble or something like that it could look very interesting. I like the idea of useing a scene to reflect another scene and i can see myself using it for a photograph to promote tourism in Peebles ( like the brief says)
I really liked this as an idea to work with and I will expand on it more later.
Another artist i found is Simon Hennessey. Hennessey did a series called Lens Reflection, this series was paintings (Acrylic on canvas), of famous landmarks reflected on tourists sun glasses.

I really like the idea of using sunglasses to reflect images, this could be a great idea to play around with as it could be good as a way of attracting tourism, like the breif wants me to imagine i am doing. The idea of it reflecting famous landmarks is also great as i could look around peebles and have it reflecting the historical landmarks in the town.
i decided to play around with this idea, i has already written in my sketch book a list of peebles attractions and also some of the ones i had found myself, from living here, that i felt should be more advertised as some peebles attraction's. I went out for a walk with sunglasses and my camera and took some photo's.
this was taken just at my house looking out of my window I really like that it reflects the town's church, I decided to make them black and white as I was not confident enough to use color in the photo, I think this could be interesting edited, if I had left the reflection of the glasses in color, I will try editing some of these once I have become more comfortable with a camera.
I think using the sunglasses in a nice location, maybe in the grass alone or with a set up scene, and having them reflect a historic landmark in Peebles could work very well.
i think these work quite well, i started by trying to reflect the town church but i found it hard to find a good angle as the church is surrounded by tree's but i could use this idea for other things, later in the week i want to try and use this idea to capture the cross kirk in Peebles or maybe Neidpath castle.
i then decided to try and capture the tree's in the sunglasses as i think they are part of what makes peebles, and the whole scottish borders quite attractive.
Another artists I looked at was photographer Richard Heeks. Heeks takes photographs of reflections in bubbles.
I decided to try and look at things in the reflection of a bubble I decided to start first with a glass ball and see what I could do.
this one i thought would look better in black and white
great start!!!!
