Written evaluation for Unit 85 Exploring Specialist Techniques

The unit overall i found very fun, although i did feel very anxious about my chosen practice - Film. The theme i chose was fear, i felt it would be easier to use this theme because i use this in a lot of my work already. I started with the basic idea of film, moving image, and how it was originally used in film and moved along looking at sound, composition, movement, mood, concept, speed and green screen. I found Composition very close to what i learned in photography, and also about experiment, knowing the rules to break them. i like the way the camera moves around, sometimes with photography i always thought of it as a scene, as in what will they see next? and now with film i can express that. I found that sound is half the battle, it effects the mood and the way you perceive what is going on, it could be a shot of a door but with sinister sound it changes how you view it. It helps you say what you are trying to say. I found it very daunting at first because it is in itself somet...

Green Screen

I decided for my exproring specialist techniques, i would look at using a green screen. I first took a quick video of me in front of a green screen. Just as an experiment. It felt a bit strange filming myself something i am not used to but i can see myself getting used to it and getting more comfortable.  It is difficult to use on the editing software i have at the college, and it looked pretty bad, so i decided if i can't make it look good, make it all bad... I decided for the background at this point it wasn't very important because it was just an experiment and thought it would be funny to use one from venice... The options on Imove ( the old version ) are a bit limited. but i found out you can play around a bit with it, cropping, softness, colour, effect, sound. I decided to add some sound to it ( something a bit silly to match the silliness of it all ) and this is what the end result is:

Drawing from observation photography

I wanted to create a blog post with some the photography i did for this unit so far that is not in my sketch book.

specialist techniques : looking at more artists

I wanted to continue my unit by looking at some more artists that use film, i wanted to make a list and comment on some works that i enjoyed/ connected with from a CD of experimental film. rainer gamsjaeger - state of flux ( http://rainergamsjaeger.com/ ) I really liked the videoseries "state of flux". This video, to me, is about the crazy nature of water, the water is flowing but changing and in a water system making it appear abstracted and almost alien. When i first saw this video i thought of wool in a rotating machine, it did not seem like water to me. I did not think it was a machine i thought it was edited! I get a huge sense of power from this but i also find it very relaxing and beautiful. So simple but complex. Juste le temps - R obert Cahen ( http://robertcahen.com/) This short film i think tells the story of two people who are about to cross paths, i like the jump between landscape and interior and between being asleep and being awake.....
